Top 5 Young Cricketers to Watch Out for in 2020

Even though COVID-19 has caused a hindrance to cricket in 2020, The resumption of cricket is slowly beginning. There a lot of young stars who are trying to secure their spot in their respective teams

The following are some of the young cricketers that we are predicting are going to have a big impact in 2020

1.Shaheen Afridi:

Shaheen Afridi is one of the youngest fast bowlers for Pakistan who manages to bowl 140+kmph. Shaheen Shah Afridi was born on 6th April 2000. On September 26th 2017n Shaheen made his First-class debut and managed to get 9 wickets in 2 innings (1 wicket-1st Innings,8 wickets-2nd Innings).

This immediately caught the eyes of the Pakistan selectors. Shaheen was picked by the Lahore Qalandars in the PSL and again impressed everyone with his skills. He immediately became popular after his sensational first-class performance.

Afridi has played only 13 First-Class matches and still has picked up 53 wickets which is quite impressive for a 17-year-old cricketer. He made his first-ever International appearance on April 3rd, 2018 against the West Indies in a T20I. Shaheen had bowled really well but didn’t pick up a wicket in that match but he was very economical.

Shaheen has not got quite as many wickets in T20Is but is still very economical. After 5 months of making his T201 debut, Shaheen got a call up to play his maiden ODI. He made his ODI debut on September 21 2018 against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi.  He picked up 2 wickets and conceded only 38 runs in his 10 overs.

Shaheen’s ODI Stats seem really impressive for a young 17-year-old Fast bowler. He has picked up 40 wickets in just 18 Innings which means that he gets 2 wickets per Innings. He also has a healthy strike rate of 23.1 which means that in every 23 balls he picks up a wicket.

Afridi also performed well in the recently concluded 2019 ODI cricket world cup where he picked up 16 wickets. In 2018 December 3rd Shaheen made his test debut against the Kiwis in Abu Dhabi.

His test debut wasn’t so impressive as he got only 3 wickets in 2 innings. Even though he didn’t do well in his test debut he excelled after that.

As you can see Shaheen has had a magnificent test career so far. He has got 30 wickets in just 12 innings which means that he gets 2 or more wickets per Innings.

Shaheen has recently been added to Category A of the PCB Central Contracts 2020-21 where he will receive 1.1M PKR. He is so far the youngest player to do so. This highlights his importance in the team and his performance.

2.Yashasvi Jaiswal:

Yashasvi Jaiswal is an 18-year-old Left Handed Batsman who represents Mumbai in the domestic format and India Under 19. Jaiswal became the youngest cricketer in the world to score a list A double century.

Yashasvi came into limelight when he scored 319 Not Out in school cricket and also picked up 13 for 99. Yashasvi was then selected for Mumbai Under 16 and India Under 19. In the ACC Under 19 Asia cup which India won, Yashasvi was the highest run-scorer in the tournament.

In the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy Yashasvi made his first-class debut and also made his List A debut in 2019 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai. He ended his Vijay Hazare trophy season with 564 runs in just 6 matches at an average of 112.80. This earned him a place in the India B squad for the Deodhar Trophy.

In the 2020 IPL auction, he was bought by the Rajasthan royals for 2.40 Crore INR.

In the recently concluded Under 19 World Cup Yashasvi finished as the highest run-scorer with 400 runs under his belt. Let’s take a look at a couple of Yashasvi’s best shots.

Wanindu Hasaranga is a 22-year-old Sri Lankan All -rounder who bowls Leg Spin.

Hasaranga is one of the best spinners in the current Sri Lankan team. Wanindu had a dream start to his international career where he picked up a hat-trick against Zimbabwe in 2017 making him the first leg spinner to do so on debut.

In list A cricket he had been awarded the most promising player award in 2016-17. He scored 765 runs in just  9 matches for the Colombo cricket club in 2018.

From the above two tables, we can say that Wanindu has had a good First-Class career in batting and bowling. He has best figures of 8 wickets and conceded only 26 runs. Whereas in batting he averages 44.47 which is exceptional for a middle-order batsman with 14 fifties and 3 tons. 

Wanindu has only played 15 ODIS and 13 T20IS and has already managed to pick-up a hat-trick. In the recently concluded ODI series against the West Indies, Wanindu was named the player of the series where he performed well with the bat and ball.

Wanindu’s key weapon has to be the wrong un he bowls. He has got the majority of his wickets through the wrong un. Let’s take a look at his wrong uns.

From the above pictures, we can see that he disguises the ball really well and it looks like a normal leg-spin but once the pitches it turns drastically towards the stumps. This is because he pitches the ball right in good length outside off stump

. As you can see in the second picture Sarfaraz Ahmed thinks the ball is a leg-spin and gets ready to play the square cut but instead the ball comes back to him at a good decent speed and he gets cramped up and gets bowled.

In Fact, Wanindu could be a great pick for any IPL Franchise.

4.Will Pucovski:

Will Pucovski is an Australian Right-Handed Batsman. He is born on 2nd Feb 1998 in Victoria, Australia, and is 22 years old. Will has been earmarked as the future of Australian batting by Ricky Ponting himself.

Will started for Victoria at the Under-19 level and scored 4 centuries in the national championships and this resulted in him making his List A debut against Pakistan in January 2017 and his Sheffield debut. He managed to score just 28 runs in his debut game.

But in his 2nd Sheffield game, he scored a spectacular 188 against Queensland, but then unfortunately his season ended in 2 games because of concussion after being hit in the head by a bouncer.

In his first Shield game of 2018-19, he became just the 8th Australian to score a Sheffield Shield double-century before the age of 21 where he made 243 against Western Australia. In 2018-19 Will got a Test Match call up for Australia against Pakistan and was named in the16-man squad. But however, he did not make it to the playing 11 as Kurtis Patterson was chosen instead of him.

Will left the squad ahead of the Canberra test due to mental health problems.

He returned to play the Sheffield Shield matches where he finished the season with 649 runs from just 7 games at an average of 54.08. And has been selected for the 50-over and 4 days for Australia against England.

Pucovski’s Unusual Batting stance:

Pucovski is a not player who plays traditional cricket shots. He plays in an unorthodox fashion where he is totally reliant on his hand-eye coordination.

Our prediction is Pucovski will soon make his Ashes debut for Australia.

5.Ollie Pope:

Ollie Pope is a 22-year-old Wicketkeeper Batsman who plays for England. Before playing county cricket Ollie shined in T20 cricket and was termed as an “inventive shot maker”.

His performance in the T20 championship attracted England’s selection panel. After just 15 first-class matches, he earned his test cap. His debut was against India in 2018, after playing just 15 first-class matches playing India on his International debut was quite a big challenge.

He had a great county season the same year where he scored 986 runs at an average of 70.43. In 2019 he was called in as the concussion substitute for the Ashes series for England.

Pope has only played 7 International test matches and already averages 47.77 with a highest score of 135 not out. Pope is definitely one of the future stars of England cricket.

Tanveer Sangha

Tanveer Sangha

Tanveer Sangha is an 18-year-old Australian Leg Spinner. He was the strike bowler for The Australian Under-19 Team in the recently concluded Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Tanveer was the leading wicket-taker for Australia in the 2020 Under 19 world cup. He picked up 22 wickets in just 9 matches with best figures of 5/14 against Nigeria Under 19.

He was also picked up by the Sydney Thunder in the Big bash league 2020 but did not get a chance to play as he was on International duty playing the Under 19 world cup for his country.

Tanveer is yet to play First-Class cricket But has been recently picked for the New South Wales squad.

He is really a one to watch out for.
